Guest lecture at USF Tampa

On Monday, 3 December 2012, I was invited to deliver a guest lecture to the "History of Soviet Union" class of Dr. Golfo Alexopoulos at USF Tampa. The main issues covered during the lecture were personal memories and perceptions of communist rule, and family experiences. It was a very productive meeting with students interested in Soviet history, and a very intense interaction during Q&A session.

NPSA 44th Annual Meeting in Boston

This year I participated in the Northeastern Political Science Assosiation  44th Annual Meeting in Boston, USA. I received valuable comments and feedback on my paper and I am very thankful to NCEEER providing professional development fund for such a great experience and to my mentor Dr. JSM for her support.

Explore Moldova!

During my presentations at USFSP on 26 October 2012 and 14 November 2012 I told USF students about history, culture and traditions in Moldova; about our popular holidays and celebrations! Of course, I could not bypass the 20th Anniversary of ULIM and the 15th Anniversary of our Department! I spiced my presentation up with our beautiful legends! Together we watched 'Hora din Moldova'! We all enjoyed the lecture! After the presentation Dr. JSM told about the Spring Abroad Course USFSP organizes in cooperation with ULIM. We really look forward to meeting with USF students in Chisinau in March 2013!

"Go Bulls!" - USF greeting hand symbol

“Go Bulls” Hand Symbol

The bullhorns created from the fingers on your hand create a powerful symbol that silently screams: “Go Bulls!” First started as a good luck symbol for basketball free-throw shots, the “Go Bulls!” The hand symbol is now used as the premier USF cheering and greeting symbol. (USF Traditions)

Fieldtrip to the Pinellas County Emergency Operations Center

On Wednesday, 31 October 2012, we visited the Pinellas County Emergency Operations Center in Clearwater together with the Urban Politics and Government class of professor Waters. It was very useful to learn how an emergency center operates, and 911 service reacts to emergency situations especially after the devastating Sandy Hurricane. The Center receives 15 000 phone calls daily in Pinellas County helping people help themselves.

Presentation at USFSP

Today I was honoured to make a small presentation about Moldova in the class of Professor Leslie Waters. Students were very interested, asked many questions and I enjoyed our interaction with them. I felt like a real teacher-ambassador of our amazing country! I hope they will register for the Spring Break Study Abroad Course - History, Government and Politics of Moldova, which USFSP develops in cooperation with Free International University of Moldova (ULIM).

Joint project with USFSP

Together with Dr. Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan we had very productive meetings with the Rector  - Dr. Andrei Galben and the Vice-rector - Dr. Viorelia Moldovan-Batranac at our University. We discussed our future joint project - an alternative course for our and American students interested in History, Government and Politics of the Republic of Moldova, which will be delivered at ULIM in Spring (during the Spring break at USFSP (Florida, USA). So, American students will be visiting Moldova to learn more about our amazing country!!!

Earlier we also had a meeting with our dean Dr. Ludmila Coada to discuss all important details of the course.

"Success is dependent on effort." ~ Sophocles

Scottish independence would come at a high price...

"In two years’ time the people of Scotland will be asked whether they want to become an independent sovereign state. It is not often that a 300-year-old union is broken, so the vote will have ramifications far beyond a land of 5m people. Scottish independence could lead to a break-up of the United Kingdom. The Catalans, among other disaffected European groups, see Scottish independence as a harbinger of their own bid for nationhood. Other diverse nation-states watch, and worry."

United in diversity

"A tolerant society is more likely to engender mutual trust and cooperation. It tends towards a more peaceful society; insofar as we are willing to learn from others, we are more able to negotiate and compromise our differences. In a tolerant society there is thus apt to be less cruelty, hypocrisy, and duplicity, less dogmatism, hatred, and fanaticism..."  Paul Kurtz

It is always difficult to speak about nations & nationalism, ethnicity & ethnic processes, religions & languages, etc. In the world full of stereotypes some notions and concepts may be misinterpreted or interpreted in two ways, but the course is over and I am happy with its results proving once more that cultural diversity only enriches our world! Together with my students we visited the national museum of ethnography and natural history at the end of the course. Here are some pictures from our classes and from the museum.
